Book Review: Arduino and Scilab based Projects

This valuable little book offers an introduction to Arduino Microcontroller projects with particular emphasis on SCILAB. The book is a good source of technical information and helps the reader to start working on electronic projects with an interfacing functionality right away. The book provides many practical examples of interfacing electronic circuits and devices to the microcontroller board with software support.

The book is divided into 3 main sections:

  • Arduino microcontroller board interfacing
  • Arduino SCILAB based projects
  • SCILAB Graphical User Interface Environment

The introduction section gives a clear description of the technical properties of the different types of Arduino board, namely UNO, MEGA and NANO which makes the useful for users to scale their project to the complexity they are after.

The interfacing section constitutes a major part of the book. It gives details on interfacing standard sensors, AC/DC voltage or current sensor types, with software support. In addition to standard sensor interfacing, the book explains the concept of interfacing digital sensors, such as serial communication and interfacing wireless components (Bluetooth and Zigbee). Details about circuitry, software and USB formats are provided for this purpose.

The second part of the book is dedicated to SCILAB applications. More specific projects are given such as servo motor control, tracking mechanism and environment monitoring which is a great help for amateurs and hobbyists to get them start on their projects. The book goes further to more complicated projects with hardware and software support.

The third section is dedicated to SCILAB GUI applications which are presented in the form of projects. Two projects have been selected: wireless building automation and wireless robot control. Step by step guidance is provided in the text to help building the projects in terms of hardware, software and the GUI design and implementation.

This is a very useful book for hobbyists as well as specialised readers who are aiming at developing specific projects and applications while providing an ample amount of help and advice in designing the hardware and software as well as GUI design.
